[ For the most part Adrien could be found in the medical tent; working. Were it up to him, that's where he'd been constantly, throwing himself into his work as a way to ignore all the personal shit that wanted to bubble up.

Unfortunately the extent of his injuries, even in the wake of Elena's excellent medical care, meant that he just physically couldn't do it. So every so often he found a small nook or craney to stuff himself in and sleep for a bit.

Oddly enough, even though the idea of a 'shared' room was effectively gone now, like a cat showing up where you last fed him, Adrien settled in the spot where Tony seemed to have alighted. Not that the Iron Man was doing much sleeping, that fact didn't escape the doctor but the space had Stark's signature all over it. So of course that's where the doctor curled himself up in some blankets and sacked out.

For the record he missed the swinging beds. Not that he couldn't sleep on the ground in a small bundle of blankets but he did appreciate a mattress. Ah well. Courser was curled up on the ground next to his companion, his colorful tail folded across his nose and his ears alert for any sounds out of the ordinary. Stark moving about was not considered out of the ordinary.

At one point, when Adrien was balled up and doing his best to make a pillow out of a rock, Tony would return to find a piece of paper tacked somewhere he couldn't ignore it. Trying to find time to actually talk, with both of them busy running like hell while standing in place, was near impossible.

Besides, sometimes writing and reading, were easier than sitting and talking. ]

Well that sucked.

I'm writing this because trying to do this as a conversation would be painful for both you and me and I think we've had enough painful. But don't imagine that I can't see what you're doing to yourself.

We took a gamble. We ... repeated after me ... WE took a gamble. This isn't on you and I know you want to take it, because that's what you do in that never ending quest to find what we both know we'll never receive. I was told once, that in trying to take it all on myself I was being a little arrogant; thinking the universe rose and fell on the strength of my decisions alone.

Yeah, I still struggle with that shit, but the words made an impact when I heard them.

If we'd done nothing, we would be on a ship that was already decaying around us. We would have been facing an unknown contagion that risked the crew and an even riskier attempt to resolve it. We were in the frying pan.

So we took a gamble; and now sure ... it looks like we're in the fire and some of us are dead, and no I can't promise you they're coming back. I can't even figure out how to manage the cryo units; which remind me to dig out the anti-grav units. That's how we'll move them.

Sorry, my thought process still gets muddled.

I can't promise you anything, Tony. Did we do right? Did we do wrong? I know how it looks at the moment and it sucks, but we're here and the only direction we have is forward, and if you suggest that I wrote any of this next bit I will fucking shoot you in the knee.

You're mad at yourself right now so these words may not mean shit to you but you need to understand that you saved my life. I was going to die in that cargo bay, the Scourge (that's what they're called by the way) were there to kill me and they weren't going to stop.

I owe you my life and my gut tells me that I'm not the only one on the crew who owes you that debt.

It's going to be hard for a bit, harder than it was and I can understand if you're done with it. You want to be angry at yourself, alright we seem to have some time while we shake off this bad landing, by angry. Be angry, be furious, be ready to throw in the towel and fold up inside where it's ... safe. I wouldn't blame you, especially as I suspect you're in a very dark and lonely place right now.

[The party is dying down towards the end of the night. Instead of roaring the fires are just a warm glow. The music is soothing in the air as most people still awake have dropped into quieter, more intimate conversations.

Hawke is exhausted. But she can't sleep.

Every time she closes her eyes. She thinks about Bethany. Or she imagines herself being swallowed by an unknowable and powerful darkness that she can't escape. So she wanders the outskirts, never really engaging anyone, brushing away anyone who knows her with a quick gesture.

Then she stops on one figure in the fading light. She would have expected he would be with Pepper. Then again he never sleeps and maybe somethings and some people never change. Hawke walks over and drops next to him, a blanket wrapped around her thin shoulders, and leans her head against his shoulder. She seats herself strategically so she's a bit behind him, so she's resting against the back of his shoulder with her forehead and its harder for him to see her face.

She doesn't say anything. It's just a gesture. Nothing more.]

[ Pepper sleeps. It's a proven fact.

Tony Stark, on the other hand, does not. At least, not as much as doctors say he should, or as much as Pepper tells him he should, or as much as he knows he should. And that was true even before the last six hellish months happened.

Anyway. Pepper sleeps and he doesn't, and he'd rather not disrupt the former because of the latter, especially when Pep needs all the rest she can get. She probably won't notice he's slipped out of the tent for another few hours at least, which is why he takes as much time as he needs to sit and think (or try not to think), his hands twisting uselessly between his bent knees. It's a testament to a lot of things that he doesn't jump when Hawke settles against him, just glances sideways out of the corner of his eye.

The silence sits for a long while before he pipes up. ]

Probably doesn't mean much to you dragon land people, but I'm pretty sure tonight's Christmas.

[ Running until she couldn't anymore, the best place to drop down was near the outskirts of the camp, not feeling the uneven ground when her knees hit. The evening sun was beginning to drop off. Elena didn't care about the drop in temperature or the fact that nightfall was close on the heels of the setting sun. She was too busy leaning forward and pressing her left arm to stomach, the quick and gasping breaths near making her sick.

Trying hard to get her breathing under control, it felt impossible.

The panic was real, it was sinking its claws in deeper.

The glow of her TAB came up. The directory was a blur. She was sure Nate could get someone else to watch the kids. She was shaking so much that the device slipped from her hand and showed her at a crooked angle. The beeping that signaled the call being made barely came through the sound of blood pounding in her ears; everything felt like it was going in slow-motion in spite of how frantic she really felt.

The sling at her neck felt heavy. Elena struggles with it, breaths gasping and short, panicked.

It's like her body's fighting her, like her lungs are refusing to accept the air she's trying to draw in. There's nothing out here to stop her from hyperventilating, nothing to ground her.

[ Tony's ready with a quip, like he pretty much always is any time someone contacts him (It's a small wonder anyone contacts him at all). It's on the tip of his tongue when he notes the caller is Elena, but once the feed actually comes through, something is... wrong.

His picture of her isn't great, tilted and off-kilter, and the labored breathing almost sounds like she's just run a great distance. And if she has, what was she running from? It's not unreasonable to assume the potential danger hasn't passed. ]

[There's a ping, and Tony will find their TAB lighting up with what is, perhaps, the most straightforward birthday invitation you've ever seen.

Clearly made in a template, maybe titled "PROFESSIONAL LINES" or something equally boring, it invites you to a "a small birthday celebration" at a new restaurant/bar opening in Kauto's Region 1.

There is a button to RSVP, and the additional option to add a "plus one".

[ at some point on tony's birthday there's some package that's like. there's just way too much tape on it. it almost might as well be in a box made of tape. (sort of.)

anyway, inside it is a verrrry rudimentary robot that has a button and once - if - pressed, it moves around a little and plays whatever was the neatest version of 'happy birthday' peter could find. it might be trying to dance? it might just be trying not to fall over. it's difficult to tell - there isn't a whole lot of articulation. mostly it's stepping forward and backward and slightly tilting here and there while the arms move on a limited rotation.

also then peter might have panicked a little because who gives tony stark a robot
so he stuffed a 15 senc gift certificate for the pizza place he works at in at the last minute. so that's like crammed into the flaps at the top and hopefully tony might see it.

the package peter made sure his name wasn't on but the gift certificate does say which employee got it - just ftr, in case tony gets curious who is sending him animated scraps. ]

[ Honestly, on the list of things Tony's not sure how best to deal with, this is definitely one of them. It makes something knot in his stomach - not in a bad way - but four cups of coffee does not actually solve it despite giving it the good old college try.

By the fourth hour of having the tiny robot in his possession, it's gone on his workbench where Dum-E can immediately begin several overtures at friendship, interspersed with preventing the little robot from walking directly off the table. Tony probably manages to kill another fourty-five minutes watching the spectacle before actually going back to work, and it's hour six by the time Dum-E realizes he can use his new friend to serenade the workshop with a "happy birthday" tune at will.

It's about three days later that Peter gets a message on his TAB. ]

[ Yesterday, Elena Fisher died.

It's safe to say the whole house is in mourning, everyone dealing with the shock of it in their own way. Nate has been a priority, of course, but nothing seems to be easing the man's silent suffering -- not that it's any wonder. Pepper remembers all too well every instance she'd feared Tony was dead, the all-encompassing, paralyzing dread that pushed everything else aside. But she's never had to live with what came after, which she thanks every deity and lucky star imaginable. The thought of the agony Nate must be in breaks her heart, as does the sight of the man that's overtaken the couch, a shadow of his old self.

The house is so quiet tonight as Pepper pads softly first to their bedroom to change into her pj's and to check up on her new, unintentionally acquired pet. The tiny pig is snug as a bug in a rug, which at least brings a brief smile to her lips. Grabbing a fluffy robe and shrugging it on, she slips her feet into a pair of slippers before leaving again. This time she beelines to the garage, knowing Tony can be found there. Even if it weren't where he spent most of his time on a regular day, he'd definitely be there now.

It feels oddly selfish to Pepper; being able to go to the one person she loves above anyone else. Nate can't. The inexplicable twinge of guilt doesn't make her feel any better, even if none of it was her fault. It wasn't anyone's fault -- unless maybe that crazy planet's.

Opening the door leading to the garage, she's greeted with low lighting and even less sounds than she'd been expecting, calling out softly as she pads deeper into the workshop, ] Tony?

[ Idle hands and an idle mind: two things Tony Stark always goes out of his way to avoid, and even more so when his brain is chasing itself in circles. So it's not surprise that the sound of footsteps pulls him out of the schematic he's been working on for the first time in hours.
